Review: It has been four long years since South African producer Culoe De Song last graced Dixon's Innervisions imprint. Happily, this belated return - a year after dropping his impressive Exodus album on Soulistic - sees him at the top of his form. 'Y.O.U.D' is, in many ways, what you'd expect - a dense but picturesque blend of thick tribal percussion, fluttering electronics, sampled yelps and eyes-wide-shut melodies. He opts for altogether deeper vibe of 'Geyser', layering dreamy chords and hazy melodies atop a hypnotic, shuffling groove blessed with delicious atmosphere. Strong stuff, all told; it's a pity it's been so long between drinks. Review: At the tail end of 2016, Culoe De Song enhanced his growing credentials with a fine set for the Watergate mix series.

This tasty EP offers a first outing for the four previously unreleased productions he slipped into that mix. All are naturally superb, and tend towards the atmospheric. 'Deadman's Walk' is a deep and emotion-rich shuffler that boasts some seriously stretched-out organ chords, while 'Aftermatch' fixes spacey electronics and stargazing melodies to a jaunty, Osunlade style drum pattern.
'Bang Royales' sounds like his fusion of deep house and the steppy rhythms of fellow South African DJ Mujave, while 'Juice' is a stretched-out shuffler with distinctive nods to both Innervisions style tech-house, and Motor City futurism. Review: Unlike its big screen namesake, Rambo, the latest release from Culoe de Song does not make its presence felt through force. If anything the opposite is true on the title track. There, the South African producer uses an intricate maze of drums and a stepping rhythm as a backdrop to deliver tribal chants, frazzled blips and the muffled, half-heard sound of urban life in the background. The track does reach a crescendo of sorts thanks to its buzzing bass, but on the dub version, this element and the external sounds and samples are kept to a minimum as he focuses on the niggling, relentless drums.
